What are the storage rooms like?

Storage rooms are purpose built and housed within spotlessly clean, modern, temperature and humidity controlled buildings. Your things are protected by the latest state-of-the-art CCTV, fire and security systems for total peace of mind. 

Storage rooms are available in a wide range of sizes to suit your requirements – you simply rent a room that offers just the right amount of space for your things so you only pay for the space you need.

What size are your storage rooms?

We offer more than 20 different sizes ranging from a wardrobe size to a double garage size and beyond. We also have extra large rooms that are the size of a mini warehouse. You can see some of our most popular sizes on our space estimator page. Otherwise, just give us a call and one of our experienced advisors will soon be able to tell you what size room you need. 


Can I call in without an appointment to view the storage rooms?

Yes. There’s no better way to gauge the size of room you’ll require and see first-hand the store and how well your things will be looked after. Reception is open for one of our experienced, friendly team to show you around from 8:30am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday and 9:00am to 3:00pm on Saturday.


What sort of security do you have?

Extra Room’s first priority is to safeguard the security of your goods. Our buildings are equipped with state-of-the-art security to monitor the safety of your belongings and give you total peace of mind.

Security measures include:

  • 24 hour digital CCTV inside and outside the buildings
  • State of the art intruder alarms and fire detection systems linked to the emergency services
  • Electronic gate access
  • Individually locked storage units
  • Individually alarmed storage units
  • Fenced, well-lit yards

Our peaceful, welcoming locations mean that you will feel comfortable accessing your storage unit day or night. Working with the UK Self Storage Association of which we are members, it’s our goal to set the benchmark for the UK self storage industry to safeguard you and your possessions. This is something we’ve successfully achieved for more than 10,000 customers over the last 15 years.

How much does storage cost?

This depends on what size room you require and how long for. You can click here to get an online quote in less than a minute or easier still, speak to one of our experienced team on 0800 232 1631. They’ll advise on the right size room for you at the best possible price. They can also help with van hire, removals and advice on packing and preparing to move into storage.


What size room do I need?

Good question! This is what we spend most of our time helping people with so we’re pretty good at it! If you need help determining the right space, please give our experienced storage advisors a call on 0800 232 1631. They’ll take an approximate inventory of your belongings and recommend the perfect size. You can also try our online space estimator.


Can I rent month to month

Yes! We offer flexible, pay as you go terms. You can store for as long as you like and move out whenever you’re ready. We just ask for 7 days notice to leave and you will be refunded for any days that you’ve paid for but not used.



How do I start renting space?

Do I need to reserve a room?

It’s highly recommended for peace of mind and to guarantee that your first choice room size is available.

Whilst it’s a large store, availability can be limited during certain busy times of the year. Reservations also speed up the move-in process.

We just ask for £30 to reserve a room. This is deducted from your first month’s storage when you move in. You then have peace of mind that your room is available whenever you’re ready. Move in dates can be amended at any time at no cost. If you need to cancel a reservation, no problem, we’ll refund you the £30 back.

How far in advance can I book a room?

Up to six months in advance. Even if you’re not sure of the exact date that you would like to move in please just let us know an estimated start time and update us when you know more. The storage room will be ready when you are. Charges only start from the day that you move in.

We just ask for £30 to reserve a room. This is deducted from your first month’s storage when you move in. Please give us a call or you can book online.


What if I’ve reserved a room and my plans change?

No problem. Please just let us know about your changes and we will amend the reservation at no cost to you.


What if I reserve one room size but when I get to the store find that I need more or less space?

No problem. This is not uncommon. It’s a big store and we always have other options available.


Can I cancel my reservation?

Yes. No problem. Please just call or e-mail and we’ll refund you the £30 reservation deposit.



How do I move in?

Will you move my stuff, or do I have to do it?

Whichever works better for you.

You can use your own transport and make as many trips to the store as you need to. Alternatively, let someone else do the hard work and we can organise a great value, professional removal service for you. We can also recommend excellent local van hire companies.

How often can I access my room and how much does it cost?

If you need longer access hours, no problem, we also have more than 600 extended access hours rooms that are open 365 days a year: Monday to Sunday – 7am to 8pm.


I’d like a shipment delivered to the store from abroad. Is this OK?

No problem. We handle this sort of thing regularly. We’ve seen and can help with any eventuality. Please get in touch.



How long can I stay?

What is the minimum or maximum storage period?

At Extra Room, it’s pay as you go. It’s totally flexible. You can store for as long as you like. 

There’s a minimum charge of one month but after that you’ll only pay for the days that you use.


Does it matter if I don’t know how long I need to store for?

Not at all. At Extra Room storage is kept flexible so you can move in and out when you want.



Whilst I’m in storage….

When can I access my storage room?

You have free, unlimited access to your storage room 6 days a week during reception opening hours. 

If you need longer access hours, no problem, we also have more than 600 extended access hours rooms that are open 365 days a year: Monday to Sunday: 7am to 8pm.


Can I upsize / downsize my storage space?

No problem. If the amount of things you have in storage changes you’re welcome to move to another size storage room at any time subject to availability. Your storage charge will be amended accordingly from the day you make the transfer.


How can I pay for my storage room?

Most people pay by monthly direct debit. You can also pay by debit or credit card either in person or over the phone or by cheque. Payment is due monthly in advance, discounts are available for longer prepayments. When you move out of storage, you will be refunded for storage time that you have paid for but not used.


What about insurance?

If you care enough about your property to store it, we strongly advise that you insure it. If you have a household or business insurance policy running whilst your goods are in storage you may find they are covered under this policy. If you don’t have a policy or you’re not sure what your current policy covers, if required, we can provide you with affordable insurance for your goods. This can be taken out when you move into storage and increased, decreased or cancelled at any time.



Moving out

Do I have to give you notice to leave?

Though we hate to say goodbye, we make the move out process as simple as possible. Just let us know you’re leaving, empty your room and we’ll close your account and refund you for any storage time that you’ve paid for but not used.

As a courtesy we just ask that you give us seven days notice before your intended move out date. If you’re unable to give seven days notice, that’s fine, you can still move your goods out of storage but you will be charged for seven days rent that you’ve paid for but not used.



What can and can’t be stored?

Is the store suitable for storing electrical items?

Yes. Our storage facility offers a temperature and humidity controlled, damp free environment. We also have a large under cover loading bays for dry, comfortable loading and unloading.


Is there anything I can’t store?

You can store almost anything, but in the interest of everyone’s safety, storage of the following items is prohibited:

  • Living items such as plants or animals (including children, relatives and ex’s!)
  • Hazardous materials such as flammable liquids and explosives
  • Items that could decompose such as exposed foodstuffs
  • Unauthorised or illegal goods, such as drugs or firearms

If you’re storing machinery that contains fuel e.g. a lawnmower, the fuel must be drained before it can be put into storage.


Can I store a Dalek?

Yes! They’re always a welcome addition to our extensive security measures!

Can I store my children / mother in law?

We get asked this a lot. Unfortunately, you can’t.

No I'm afraid you cannot put children into storage!



Storage for businesses

Can you receive items on my behalf?

Yes. We can accept deliveries for you in your absence.


Do you offer a forklift service?

Yes. This is free of charge.


Can I put shelving in my room?

Yes. You can install your own shelving or we can provide shelving for you.


Can you help with removals and courier services?

Yes. Every business that stores with us has their own individual needs. We’re here to help and will tailor our services to make things as easy as possible for your business.



Boxes & packaging materials

Can I buy boxes and packaging materials, even if I don’t rent storage from you?

Yes! We sell a wide range of boxes, bubble wrap and packaging materials. Whether you store with us or not, packaging materials can be bought from the reception at the store or we offer free delivery to Nuneaton, Hinckley, Tamworth and Atherstone postal addresses.
